What do Smart Thermostats do?

In times past, you could only do a couple of things with your home thermostat, set it to heat or cool and set the temperature. But the modern smart thermostat can allow you to have far greater control over your energy consumption, potentially saving you lots of money, both during the heat of summer and the chill of winter.

The standard feature of a smart thermostat is that it can be programmed. If everyone is out of the house during the day, at work or school, then you can set the thermostat to a higher temperature, one that would ordinarily be uncomfortable if someone were there. You could then program the device to start cooling or heating an hour or so before the first member of your family returns home so that they find the house nice and comfortable when they arrive.

Thermostats also now have wi-fi connections that grant you even more control over your heating and cooling. Let’s say that you return home unexpectedly. You can use your smartphone to bring your house back into the comfort zone earlier than it had been programmed to. If you find that you’ve been delayed, you can reset the thermostat so that it starts cooling or heating your house later than it was initially programmed to.

A recent innovation uses motion detectors to cause the thermostat to start chilling or warming the house if someone is detected as having arrived.
